Sywell Country Park
Twywell Hills and Dales (Grid Reference SP945775) consists of two areas of old quarry workings. The Whitestones area, shown here is on limestone, while the Gullet area is a steep-sided old ironstone mine.

KEY SPECIES
Grizzled and Dingy Skippers and Green Hairstreaks occur in good numbers in May, followed by Brown Argus, and Marbled White in June/July, and White-letter Hairstreak, as well as common grasland species.

Glapthorn Cow Pasture (Grid Reference TL003904) is an area of old pasture consisting of blackthorn which has now reverted to woodland.

Blackthorn is the foodplant of the Black Hairstreak and this is its best site in the country with managed glades and clearings with ample brambles and privet, key nectar sources.

Fermyn (Grid Reference SP967854)is a mature mix of conifers and broadleaved trees which provides ideal conditions for our main woodland species, especially the Purple Emperor, which breds on the abundance of sallow.

Most of Northamptonshire's important woodland species are to be found here, which is now acknowledged to be the best Purple Emperor site in the country. White Admirals, Purple and White-letter Hairstreaks accompany the more common butterflies.

Branack Hills and Holes (Grid Reference TF075046) is a National Nature Reserve just outside Northants. The limestone from here was quarried in Roman and Medieval times for many important buildings and the site has long been renowned for its rare plants.
Barnack Hills and Holes
Especially famous for its show of Pasque flowers in Spring, Barnack also has a number of species of orchids. The main butterfly species are the Brown Argus, Green Hairstreak, Marbled White and the recently introduced Chalkhill Blue.
